HIA COMPETITION ENTRIES 2010 : Melbourne Bathroom Renovations
Job: Bathroom Renovations Melbourne- Carnegie
Brief: A ‘classique’ contemporary look
This bathroom wasn’t even used…except for storage…yep…storage! It’s the first room you see when you enter the front door so the owners wanted to DO something about it. The owner already had the design in mind for her bathroom renovation so it then became our job to make that a reality with our knowledge and expertise.
Existing conditions- before the bathroom renovation…
The shower…whoa! Not pretty! The bath was an old beautiful claw foot and there was plenty of space to work with which equals loads of potential for an amazing bathroom renovation!
We decided to relocate the toilet to an adjacent wall so it wasn’t the first thing you saw as you entered the bathroom. The old claw foot went to get a nip and tuck and came back looking like it had a month in the Maldives! Its new external colour- deep dark dulux ‘Companion’ and crisp white inside. To finish it off it was accessorised by chrome feet. Amazing what a month in the Maldives can do! (or Jims bath resurfacing!)
The bathroom renovation budget didn’t allow for a fully frameless shower screen, so we got the next best thing from Prestige screens, a ‘real’ semi frameless shower screen 950 x 950 x 2000
Vanity selection was made by the owner, she had a real concept in mind for her overall bathroom renovation so we had one custom made. We created a ‘one off’ 1400mm wide ‘piece’ using polytech fine grain melamine in black, 2 double drawers either side with an exposed bottle trap in the centre. To add a beautiful finishing touch to this vanity it was topped with 20mm edge detail white Carrara stone which create a shadow line around the unit. An ideal standard ‘tonic’ vessel basin and Mizu extended basin mixer complete the package.
The client chose a polished porcelain ‘alto egg shell’ tile for the bathroom floor and walls and we used ’mud berry’ grout. The walls were painted with Wattyl ‘gardenia glow’
The bathroom renovation was finished with a beautiful Deco inspired mirror and an ideal standard close coupled BTW tonic toilet suite.

Brief: HELP!!!
Here we had a very old bathroom with significant water damage. The tiles were removing themselves which certainly helped with the demolition but the owner needed something much more efficient! This bathroom renovation was about optimizing the small space as well as making it usable and pleasant for the owner.
So in came Advaland to save the day…er… week…um…bathroom! The owner wanted to remove the bath as she is environmentally conscious and given the state of play with water restrictions saw no need for it. This also gave us much more room to extend the shower to make it much more luxurious.
So we decided to design a 1200 x 900 walk in shower with a tiled base and gessi mixer.
The bathroom comes complete with a 1200 x 900 x 2000 10mm toughened frameless screen, chocolate floor tiles with a mint wall tile and chocolate mosaic feature tile around the perimeter.
We also installed for this bathroom renovation a wall hung, full room width Caesar stone top vanity with 40mm edge detail and a Vileroy and boch vessel basin and beautiful Gessi wall basin/mixer set.

Brief: Bluestone Dream
This Melbourne property owner told our bathroom renovation team that he wanted something beautiful and luxurious for his bathroom renovation. The main concern for this bathroom renovation was the limited space.
The desired choice for tiles in for this bathroom renovation was honed basalt/ bluestone… a natural product that feels divine underfoot despite ambient temperature. This was laid floor to ceiling.
Next… a traditional bath… not this time! We constructed a custom size bath footprint, lined and waterproofed including a stainless channel grate with a custom made plug system exclusive to Advaland. The bath was tiled inside and out with the same honed basalt/bluestone tiles. A true soaker for those rare moments of purely relaxing!
The original plan was to also tile the ceiling, but after searching high and low to find a product that was guaranteed to withstand inverted placement (without a mechanical fixing) with no success a creative new plan was put in place. The owners love of timber was then brought into the bathroom renovation- the ceiling was lined with wide Merbau and 8G stainless steel fixings completing the overall sensual spa/resort feel of the bathroom.
For the lighting, 2 down lights were installed on dimmers so the owner could wash the week away with a glass of wine in a softly lit bathroom. Then the lights can be turned up brightly when getting ready for work or a night out.
The bathroom was completed with ideal standard hideaway cistern and contrasting vitra s50 pan together with white wall hung vanity and tall boy (with power points inside to hide electric tooth brush and other appliances!).

Brief: En-suite bathroom…..rarely used!
Our clients had gone through the laborious task of comparing bathroom renovations quotes from across Melbourne and trying to compare apples with oranges…it’s tough when it’s not your area of expertise. Thanks to our informative quoting process they chose to use Advaland for their bathroom renovation!
The owners didn’t use their en-suite except for a bath from time to time…it wasn’t a warm inviting space so something had to be done to optimise the fact, that they had made such a desired commodity off their bedroom!
They knew they wanted to have a bath in their bathroom, and they chose the Decina modena, a nice deep and wide bath. A fixed square toughened frameless screen was installed and a Posh Solus 4 function brass rail shower set, complete with a Mizu shower/bath diverter and Mizu bath outlet were also chosen.
A close coupled BTW Vitra S50 toilet suite was installed. A custom made vanity was selected in laminex with a Caesar stone top 40 mm edge detail a Hox square semi recessed basin and Mizu basin mixer finished with a Mizu push plug to complete the fixtures and fittings of the bathroom renovation.
Bathroom tile selection…the fun part for most owners during a renovation! A dark tan with darker tan flecks was chosen for the floor and for the wet area walls a light caramel/French vanilla tile.
By the end of the job the bathroom was looking fantastic except for the untiled walls. As we hadn’t originally quoted to paint this bathroom renovation, we decided it would complete the job so we repainted at no charge to leave the owners with an exceptional piece.
And now the bathroom is used daily…

Brief: spa drama! Give me space!
Our client had a large corner spa in their en suite which took up far too much room for such a small bathroom space. To make things worse the pump had exploded and had flooded their downstairs area which is what inspired them to give us a call to start their bathroom renovation.
To begin the bathroom renovation we stripped the bathroom right back so we had a completely blank canvas.
The client originally wanted a double shower with 2 drop down shower heads from the ceiling but unfortunately this wasn’t going to work with the ceiling height. So our renovations expert came up with the great idea of using a Nikles twin shower rail instead. It’s double shower head fitted into the massive shower space created a bathroom that would eclipse a Taj ma Hal en-suite!
Next the client chose the bathroom tiles. Upon her tile selection she came across a pencil tile to die for… it was more expensive than 2 latte’s at the Church St Pantry…per tile! 38 pencil tiles later…and we had a bathroom that epitomised her dream at a fraction of the cost of a Taj ma Hal en-suite and in 1/1000th of the time.
Thank god for Advaland Melbourne bathroom renovations team… (marketing PLUG!). So, to maintain the client’s bathroom budget we completed the renovation with a great value, off the shelf vanity and close coupled toilet suite from Swan Plumbing. The client added a few extra accessories and the bathroom renovation was complete!
